Atenafu’s story
The history of Atenafu is somehow very inspiring. Atenafu, along with the other children, used to spend his time asking passers-by for money. His mother with her younger son were sitting in the street and she was also begging. She herself could not write or read, she never started school. From birth, she lived in extreme poverty. We invited Atenafu to open classes. He was coming regularly, so he ended up in indicative program and then we received him in the center. A begging mom wouldn’t be able to take good care of him. Every day I passed her on the street when I got off the minibus on my way to the center. She greeted me and I greeted her. This is how life passed until we decided to give her a chance to earn money. We asked what she would like to do. She chose to prepare the injera. She can’t even do it herself, but her daughter, who used to work as a housekeeper, had experience with it. So they had a deal – the daughter makes, the mother sells. We bought all the necessary set and they started working. From that day on, I never saw Athenafu’s mom on the street again. She stopped begging. Maybe she’s not particularly nimble in this business. We didn’t even expect that. The main thing is that she regained her dignity. After all, she has a normal job. Atenafu returned home for over a year at the center. He started school in a new place. For all our pupils, returning home is a mixture of feelings – they are happy that they will be with their family, but they also feel sorry to leave their lives at a slightly better level in the center. Atenafu has been saying for some time that he wants to return to his mother. In the end, he got what he wanted.
