My mission in Ethiopia

Let me introduce myself to those who don’t know m yet.My name is Magda Soboka and I have been running a center for street children for three years.

I come from Poland, I graduated from engineering studies in Automatics and Robotics, but this field is not my vocation. I completed my formation for Comboni Lay Missionaries and landed in Ethiopia over 6 years ago. Initially, for two years I served here and there – I taught children at school, women in prison, I conducted catechesis for various groups. From the beginning of my mission in Ethiopia, the thought of working with street children was in my head, until I made a crazy decision to create a center for them, thanks to which they would be able to change their lives.

I founded Barkot Children of Ethiopia Foundation, first in Poland, then registered in Ethiopia. During the first two years, I also met Tesfa, my husband, who believed that this project was justified even more than I did. After setting up the foundation in Poland, I returned to Ethiopia as a married woman. Together with Tesfa, we managed to get started and so far we continue to work with street children. We have managed to help over 90 children. And it’s not about distributing notebooks or clothes. But largely about a total change – from living on the streets, begging passers-by, intoxicating themself to living a dignified life, enjoying childhood, going to school and having prospects for the future.

What exactly do I do?

– supervising the work of the center and the entire project

– active participation in all its activities

– writing projects, reports, fundraising and contact with donors

– raising my own daughters: Monika (almost 3 years old) and Rita (six months)

You can believe me or not, but I wouldn’t really have comprehended it all by myself, if it wasn’t for God who guides me.

In October, I am trying a little harder to encourage prayer for the missions, and today I would especially like to ask you to pray for me. Even though I am very happy, it is sometimes difficult for me, also now.

Thank you for being here.
