Feast of the Baptism of the Lord in Ethiopia
Timket, or the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord, is one of the most characteristic holidays in Ethiopia, especially in the Ethiopian Orthodox Church. However, this holiday is celebrated not only by the Orthodox. The entire celebration focuses on the processions that assist the Arks of the Covenant located in all Orthodox churches. First, the Arks are carried on the heads of the priests from the churches, they go to the water source (in the case of Awassa, the crowds go to the lake). There are long prayers, new baptisms, lighting with water. It is only the next day, and sometimes even the next, that the crowds escort the Arks back to the churches.
How do Catholic churches celebrate the Baptism of the Lord? There are no Arks of the Covenant here, but there is also a long mass, baptisms, and a procession around the church. And after the end, especially for young people and children, there is a bit of fun in the form of abundant pouring of water. On that day, Nahom (the elder) was baptized. For several months he regularly attended catechesis for children and decided to become a Catholic.
