Story of Abera
A wide variety of children come to our center. Most of them join us willingly and easily. Life on the streets is difficult, after all—they constantly have to struggle for food, shelter, and so on. At the center, children are provided with not only basic needs but also plenty of entertainment and, most importantly, some prospects for the future. However, there are difficult cases of children who have trouble adapting and adjusting to the rules. Abera was one of them. I had some doubts about his change. He didn’t attend open classes regularly. When he did, he was intoxicated anyway. He was physically present, but mentally, he was so-so. He couldn’t concentrate and couldn’t remember what we taught them. He wasn’t entirely sure he wanted to be at the center. He once ran away, but we gave him another chance. There were complaints about him at school—”he doesn’t write,” “he’s disruptive,” and so on. He’s been at the center for two years—now he’s unrecognizable. He’s active at school and gets very good marks. He doesn’t cause any problems at the center, is well-behaved, and takes meticulous notes during classes. When I look at him, I feel moved and even more certain that I always have to give a chance – even when I humanly doubt it.
