Life on the street
A patch of fenced land right next to the sidewalk, where a tree grows. There’s no grass, as this place serves as a dormitory for at least a few boys. They spread cardboard boxes on the ground. Next to it is a relatively high wall, where they climb and store bags of their personal belongings. A few clothes. Of course, there’s nothing valuable there, because even if there were, someone could easily steal it. Torn and dirty clothes aren’t attractive to anyone. We go to places like this to invite children to participate in oratory, which is the first step towards a better future. During the classes, we prepare children for school. It’s not about catching up on all their schoolwork in a few months—it’s more about them learning simple, systematic work. They need to show that they care. We teach them discipline and personal hygiene, and we play with them to motivate them. Many children who have lived on the streets for a long time need some time to overcome their struggles. Let’s keep our fingers crossed for them and pray they don’t give up too soon!
