Bekele’s story
Bekele (11 years old) went to the streets about 2 years ago. His mother died and his father remarried and did not pay much attention to the boy. Moreover, the family’s financial situation was very difficult. Nobody provided the boy with the opportunity to go to school, and it was very difficult to meet basic needs such as food or clothes. He didn’t get along with his stepmother.
He was unkempt at home and nobody was interested in him, so he came to Awassa and began to live on his own. He found a group of children with whom he slept with, begged and ate. Eventually he ended up in the center, where after some time attending open classes and completing the indicative program, he got accomodated. Currently, he is in the first grade of primary school.
